Bigger Boat Family Tree: The Perps – Loogey Henchman Saves the World demo 1997

Bigger Boat Family Tree: The Perps Loogey Henchman Saves the World demo 1997 by Jimbo Rosario New Richmond, WI is a small town not far from Minneapolis/St. Paul. It sits about 40 minutes (depending on traffic) east of the Twin Cities, just over the Wisconsin border. There’s not a whole lot to do there, and it’s certainly not known for its Punk scene. It’s not actually known for anything that I’ve ever noticed or heard of. It does boast the 9th deadliest tornado in U.S. history, which is something to be proud of, I suppose. When my family moved there in November of 1992, I was not a happy camper. I was a freshman in High School and had no interest in making any new friends. I hated New Richmond. I hated all the jocks and backwoods rednecks at my school. I hated the clothes they wore and the fact that they all seemed to chew tobacco. The place was a dump and the people were ignorant. I secretly hoped another tornado would wipe it all out so we could go back to civilization. New Richmond did have one saving grace, however. There was one thing that I was okay […]

Bigger Boat Family Tree: The Krebscouts – Rock n Roll Pneumonia demo 1996

Bigger Boat Family Tree: The Krebscouts Rock n Roll Pneumonia demo 1996 by Jimbo Rosario The Krebscouts were the first “real” band I played in. I say “real” because the bands I’d been in before didn’t know how to tune their instruments. It’s true, I never tuned my bass once until Ben showed me how when we started The Krebscouts. That might seem pretty lazy or dumb, but nobody ever told me that was something you were supposed to do. Oh well. In the fall of 1995, my friend Dan Nygard told me that he’d found some kids from Fargo South High to play in the band we had been trying to start. I was a bit skeptical, we went to Moorhead High after all, but at least they weren’t from West Fargo, I figured. Dan took me over to Ben’s mom’s house one day, and when he answered the door, I recognized him from Island Park (the premiere skate spot in those days), so I figured he was all right. Originally, I was to play 2nd guitar and Dan’s brother Leif was going to play bass. I didn’t really want to play guitar because I pretty much stunk at it (still […]

All My Records: Spitboy – Rasana

All My Records: Spitboy Rasana by Jimbo Rosario It’s only been in the last four or five years that I have really come to appreciate Spitboy. I’ve always admired them, they’re even on the other side of one of my favorite records of all time, but they still managed to fall through the cracks a bit for me. You know, one of those bands that you’ve always known about but never really listened to sort of scenarios. I first heard them in ’95 or so when their split with Los Crudos came out, and was into what they were doing, but unfortunately, I never delved any deeper. I wish I had. I really feel like I missed out on something.   Jes and I found this seven inch at some record shop in Atlanta a few years back which prompted me to look up how much stuff they actually put out. From 1991 until 1995 they released 3 seven inches, an LP, and of course the split LP with Los Crudos. I don’t know why, but that’s more material than I thought they had, and it’s all really quite good. The best word I can think of to describe Spitboy’s sound […]

Here We Go!

by Jimbo Rosario A number of years ago, my good friend Cory Helm told me that I should write a book in which I tell stories about the first time I listened to this record or that record. I thought it was a good idea then and I still do.  My favorite records and bands are a big deal to me. I love most of my records, some are ok, and a few are terrible.  I’m going to review all of them.  I may not just write about the music itself, mind you. I’d like to also share things like where I was, and who I was, and who I was with when I heard these records for the first time, and maybe most importantly, how they changed me.  You know, lame, emo stuff like that.  I think records are kind of like a time machine, or maybe a timeline of your life. They can bring you back to places and time periods, linking the past to the present, and that’s one of the many things I love about them. That and the music, I suppose. Film , for me, serves a very similar purpose, so get ready for some […]
